Bridging the Gap

The Pupil Premium is an allocation of additional funding to schools to support specific groups of children who are vulnerable to possible underachievement. These include pupils who are entitled to Free School Meals, those looked after by the local authority and children of armed service personnel. The intended effect of this funding is to accelerate progress and raise attainment. The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities, by ensuring that funding reaches the pupils who need it most.

In most cases the Pupil Premium is allocated and is clearly identifiable. It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium, allocated to schools per free school meals pupil, is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility.

The Pupil Premium was introduced in April 2011 and is allocated to schools to deliver provision for pupils who have been registered for free school meals at any point in the last six years (known as ‘Ever 6’ FSM). All schools are required to report on the amount of funding received, how this is being used, and the impact of any work done.

At Newbald Primary School we are using our Pupil Premium funding in three main areas:

  • To achieve academically; to raise attainment and progress
  • To develop skills for success in life

  • To allow children to participate in a range of experiences

We will ensure that a range of provision is made which will meet the needs of all pupils. Our main aim in the use of Pupil Premium is to accelerate progress; initially in Literacy and Numeracy. We want to give as many individuals as possible the opportunity to reach at least age related expectations and for many of our pupils, we are aiming to stretch them beyond this.
